Flo

Flo is a 2D animation I created for my final year project. I used my own watercolour paintings for the textures, and drew a lot of the scenes frame-by-frame (some were key-framed on After Effects). My frame drawing process used Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and After Effects. Below is the process for the scene of Flo and Fish meeting for the first time:

I would start out by drawing the movements in an Illustrator document, I had to give a lot of thought to the timing and which movements she would hold on, and which she would move through quickly. I had to make sure there were an adequate amount of frame drawings for smoother movement, else things could look quite "jumpy".

Next, I took the drawings into Photoshop and filled them with her texture. In drawings with a lot of movement, such as this one, I had to use reference points within the drawing and texture to keep Flo's filling consistent in each frame.

Finally, I selected the drawings one by one and placed them in their scene, which was often in Photoshop. I aligned them, and in timeline view, set the layers to appear at their appropriate pacing. Depending on the complexity of the scene, I could also make the waves bob and have it completed within Photoshop. However if keyframing was needed, I would take the scene into After Effects and complete the scene there.

Here is the finished product!
